WE'RE BACK, BABIES!

GBB 2018 is a go!

Sign-ups are open now, all using the same form. Re. the end date for sign-ups: we're doing something different this year. Sign-ups will not close until two days before the authors' drafts are due. The idea is that at any time if you realise you have a GBB-appropriate story going on you can go 'oo! me too!' and jump in to join. You will not, however, get any extension for that: you are still bound to the draft due date of June 30.

And by the way - that date, and the rest of the schedule? Designed to fit around the Sabriel Big Bang. There's a little over a month and a half between the due dates, so it should be manageable for those who want to do both.

COME AND JOIN US!

Well done to all of those who got their projects completed! We had an unusually high rate of drop-outs this year, which makes it even more impressive for those who did finish despite losing their partners or working with a pinch-hitter.  Congrats all, and there's some very exciting art and fic that came out of it that we can all now enjoy at leisure!

Community's closed for another year - but if you want to participate next year, make sure you subscribe so you get an email notification when the next round is announced.

Hi folks! Just a reminder that today, 19 Jun, is the due date for the art drafts.  I assume this means I will be receiving a whole bunch of emails any hour now!

Please note:

  • Every art draft is due today. There are no exceptions to this: I need to have them in hand so that I can make sure I don't have to start advertising for a pinch hitter. I will accept it as long as it's still the 19th somewhere in the world, but after that, no.
  • Your submitted draft does not need to be complete, but it MUST meet the minimum art requirements for size etc, and it MUST convince me that you're going to be able to complete it on time.
  • The art itself should be attached as a file (or set of files) to the email, or you can provide a link to it on your website. If the latter, it must be LOCKED (not public), and therefore, obviously, you'll have to provide me with a password or similar secure way of seeing it.
  • In the body of the e-mail, we need the following information:
    • Title of fic:
    • Artist name:
    • Author name:
    • Warnings for art (if any):
  • You will receive email confirmations that I've received these, so don't worry. It may take a couple of days, but everyone will receive a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours of the close of the due date - probably a lot sooner depending on when you send it. But there's only one of me, so, you know. Depending on real life commitments this may go slowly.

Well folks, since nobody registered any preferences for dates I assume all is good, so we are all in the same order as we were on the arts claims post! If anybody has any serious problems with their date (or if a problem arises) let me (and your collaborator) know immediately and you can be moved to one of the blank dates.

June 25: Love among ruins
Author - sakuai. Artist - velocitym1.
Summary: Museum curator and archaeologist Gabriel Winchester found a treasure map leading to earth's lost treasure - a faberge egg. Excited to venture to the Country of Enochia, he isn't happy that he's been saddled with bodyguard Sam Winchester. Sam thinks Gabriel is a spoilt troublemaker. But between the sand dunes and crypts will they find love?
Pairings: Gabriel / Sam
Warning / tags: None
Length so far: 26k
Key visual elements: Otherworld-like, tombs, deserts. Indiana-Jones-like.

June 27: Mirror, mirror, lie to me

Author - velocitym1. Artist - thisshouldbegabriel.
Summary: After meeting Sam and Dean, Gabriel decides to try to stop the apocalypse before it starts, and then he gets in over his head when Sam turns out to be way more than he bargained for.
Pairings: Sam/Gabriel
Warning / tags: Explicit sexual content, canon-typical violence.
Length so far: 16k
Key visual elements: This fic runs through the last five or so episodes of season two, and has several scenes in Gabriel's apartment.

June 28: None.

June 29: It starts with a single feather

Author - majestic duxk. Artist - emmatheslayer.
Summary: Gabriel never believed he would find his mate. It had been... millennia, and his omega didn’t appear. He cut himself off from the Heavenly Host. But when Castiel brings his mate’s brother round Gabriel is forced to reassess. Now he needs to bring himself up to scratch, make himself a nest and win his mate!
Pairings: Gabriel/Dean, Castiel/Sam, other minor pairings
Warning / tags: alpha!Gabriel, omega!Dean, alpha!Castiel, omega!Sam, alpha!Michael, alpha!Lucifer, domestic fic, lots of cleaning, depression, references to extended depressive episodes, family bonds, humour, sassy characters, courtship, wing kink, chuck is god, relationships mentioned in passing, angel!au, nesting, mating flights, feathers, misunderstandings, knotting, omega verse, mention of eggs, no mpreg, but it is possible in this verse
Length so far: 20k
Key visual elements: Character-focused, various rooms from the great hall of heaven, to a friendly bachelor pad, to a really messy house, lots of angels, feathers, wings

June 30: Things that shine
Author - casandsip. Artist - kdheart.
Summary: When Balthazar makes a drunken bet that Gabriel can't successfully get a job as a White House tour guide, Gabriel never actually expects to win.He definitely doesn't expect to run into President Sam Winchester in a back corridor of the White House, and to slowly start falling in love with him. After all, Gabriel failed out of acting school and can barely make himself pancakes without setting the kitchen on fire - he definitely isn't the kind of guy who should be dating the President. (It's just possible that Sam disagrees with that.)
Pairings: Gabriel/Sam
Warning / tags: Explicit sex
Length so far: 19k
Key visual elements: Gabriel and Sam wearing a lot of suits, an entire first date outing in one tiny apartment, Washington DC, secret cuddling in corridors, fluff, nervous Sam, midnight serenades

July 1: Angelic mating rituals are a pain in the ass
Author - aria lerendeair. Artist - gabrieltrickster.
Summary: Ever since angels were cut off from heaven, they have lived on earth. They mate with humans now, forming Alpha/Beta pairs or Alpha/Beta/Omega triads, feeding off the energy of the souls their humans carry to continue to survive. A soul bond is one that lasts forever and cannot be severed by earthly means. A single human can support a single angel in a soul bond. All triads are two humans and one angel. An angel has to find a mate (or mates) to feed off of before the power of their Grade runs out or they fade, and whither away to nothing. Gabriel is an archangel, an omega as well, and he is getting closer and closer to the danger of fading. When he meets Castiel and Sam Winchester, he knows that they can't be together, but that doesn't stop him from wanting. A split second decision ends up binding his fate to theirs, and Gabriel prays for the first time in eons that he might find his happy ending.
Pairings: Castiel/Sam, Gabriel/Castiel/Sam
Warning / tags: A/B/O Dynamics (minimal outside of smut scenes), Mentions of Alpha Dominance, Angsting, Miscommunication
Length so far: 17k
Key visual elements: Wings! Gabriel has six golden wings and Castiel has two black ones, and other angels also have wings out, at all times, as it is a part of their 'falling' from heaven. Outside of that, normal dynamics inside an office building, or Gabriel's apartment.

July 2: None.

July 3: Surviving the apocalypse, for dummies

Author - scrollingkingfisher. Artist - kuwlshadow.
Summary: Before Castiel went to Hell, before angels and demons and the apocalypse, he and Gabriel met the Trickster. Some things change, but some things stay the same. This is a story about a pair of brothers, and how they saved the world. (Basically, reverse-verse.)
Pairings: Gabriel/Sam, Dean/Cas
Warning / tags: Graphic violence, torture, character death but it's temporary. All that happy stuff.
Length so far: 80k
Key visual elements: It's a reverse verse, so picture any dramatic moments from seasons 2-5 and it's likely that they'll be in there, particularly any of the episodes that originally had Gabriel in. Also notably there's a bit with trueform angels sandwiched in at the end of Lucifer Rising, the back end of Hammer of the Gods has some serious alterations, and (spoilers!) they get a happy ending.

July 4: None.

July 5: None.

July 6: State of disgrace

Author - writeonclara. Artist - captain d_leet.
Summary: Injured detective Sam Winchester is forced on long term disability after taking a bullet to the hip. Living in a loft is obviously out, but Sam's not so sure his new apartment is much better. The space is nice, but he could do without the prank-playing dead guy for a roommate.
Pairings: Sam/Gabriel, Dean/Castiel
Warning / tags: Canon-typical violence
Length so far: 34k
Key visual elements: Dead archangel Gabriel facing ex-cop Sam in battle over prime apartment territory: who will get the couch today? Modern prankster-ghost story set in Northern California: floating spice bottles, lewd scrabble games, chains strewn across kitchens and around a battered Gabriel, and a joyous explosion of light and laughter when an angel gets his wings back.

July 7: But what God gives
Author - kibbers. Artist - tony the girl.
Summary: After Metatron takes over heaven and starts to send angels, wingless, falling to Earth, Gabriel takes over Death's job and thinks himself lucky to have found a place to protect his wings. Centuries later, after Chuck retakes the reigns, Gabe finds himself still there, still taking souls and dealing death from his palms. Ben is just another name on his list for the day. But when Sam Winchester offers up his soul instead, Gabe writes them up a deal. Sam becomes his assistant for the next two weeks, Gabe searching for glimpses of Sam's soul to sketch to completion and Sam fighting to keep it hidden around the rules they set in place. As their deal begins, both of them start to wonder if they're going to make it through these two weeks after all.
Pairings: Sam/Gabriel
Warning / tags: Major Character Death, Many Deaths of Varying Reason (Drowning, Old Age, Fire, Etc.), Minor Mentions of Abuse (Secondary Character), Sexual Content
Length so far: 38k
Key visual elements: Varying colors/shapes of souls, Gabe's wings, Sam's soul, darker themes, Gabriel flying, sort of a 'Beauty and the Beast' vibe

July 8: In another time
Author - jcapasso916. Artist - kdheart.
Summary: After Gabriel finds out about Sam falling in the cage he can't handle it. Once Raphael is gone he gathers as much power as he can as the last archangel, and heads back in time to rewrite history and give Sam the life he should have had from the beginning.
Pairings: Implied past unrequited Gabriel/Sam
Warning / tags: None
Length so far: 15500
Key visual elements: Gabriel rocking baby Sam. Gabriel carrying young Sam and Dean. Gabriel with young Sam, Dean, and Mary, Gabriel guarding Mary and Sam's crib from Azazel. Gabriel being tortured by Raphael.

July 9: Misselthwaite
Author - whitmerule
Summary: Secret Garden AU. When sickly, spoiled little Gabriel Milton moves to Yorkshire from India, everybody thought he was the most unpleasant child they had ever seen. It was true, too. But Misselthwaite Manor has its mysteries - a common moor-boy who knows everything there is to know about growing things and his little brother who can talk to animals, a hundred rooms all closed up, the sound of a child crying in the night - and not the least of them, the secrets in the garden.
Pairings: They're all kids, so, none; but all the relationships between the four boys receive attention.
Warning / tags: Book fusion; 'historical' au; implied child neglect; trans child character (and adults not responding well to that); mute character; period-accurate colonialist attitudes to India.
Length so far: 60k
Key visual elements: Brooding gothic manors and adoration of the Yorkshire spring and English gardens, especially roses; period clothing; Dean and Sam interacting with various animals (esp. robin redbreast, fox, squirrels, crow); contrast between dark musty rich old rooms and the bright sunny mysterious growing gardens outside; basically google 'secret garden illustrations' and pick your poison!

Hi folks - just a quick note!

- if you have not yet managed to make contact with your artist/artist, let me know because this is a problem!
- have another look at the date when posting will start. I can't link right now as I am on mobile, but the link is easy to find. If there are any periods within the fortnight after that starting date where you absolutely cannot finish your work, LET ME KNOW within the next 48 hours, as I am in the process of making the posting schedule.

That's all - carry on!

And remember:

Art drafts due: June 19, 2016
Posting begins on: June 25, 2016

Authors, remember also that your story must be betaed, and that you are primarily responsible for a) keeping your artist in the loop and giving them a draft they can work with, and b) organising posting with them.

Hi all! It's time for our second check-in!

Just as a reminder, our writers' first drafts are due on May 15 2016. Just over a month! Oh no! I mean... everything's under control, right? Right?

So, this second check-in is not compulsory, but it's strongly encouraged for purposes of Touching Base (you may leer if necessary). And this time you get to share a snippet of your fic!

Please answer the questions below in a comment - and add anything else you feel like adding - then share a snippet, of not-too-long length. (Look at me being completely pedantic.)

1. Have you started the story yet?
2. How confident are you of making the May 15 deadline?
3. What sort of difficulties (if any) are you encountering in writing the story?
4. Why is a blackboard?
5. If a bullet is fired nowhere near a queer female character and there are no cameras to see it, what happens?

Good afternoon, morning, or local time of your choice, to all you big bang writers out there! It's time for the first authorial check-in!
Just as a reminder, our writers' first drafts are due on May 15 2016. That's a little over 60 days away, by my reckoning!

This is your first check-in. Just a quick and easy way for you to let us know how you're doing so far. ;) It is not compulsory, but we encourage you to participate - and chat to each other in the comments and so on, form support groups, etc!

Please answer the questions below in a comment - and add anything else you feel like adding!

1. Have you started the story yet?
2. How confident are you of making the May 15 deadline?
3. What sort of difficulties (if any) are you encountering in writing the story?
4. Dogs, cats, birds, or all of the above?
5. What is Luke Skywalker's sexuality?

Next check-in is April 3, which is when you'll be allowed to share a small snippet of your story! :)

Until then, have fun writing, and adoring Mark Hamill!

Oh no! Quick! The window in which to sign up is narrowing! Go this way to sign up (artists over here, support folks over here) - but first, make sure to cast your eyes on the rules, schedule, and instructions, and don't forget to join the community and track it to be sure you're notified of all announcements and reminders!

If you don't have a dreamwidth account, it isn't absolutely necessary to create one, as you can mostly participate via OpenID, but it's your responsibility to keep up with the key dates.

So, who's up for Gabriel Big Bang 2016?

Authors this way to sign up, artists over here, support folks over here.

But first, make sure to cast your eyes on the rules, schedule, and instructions, and don't forget to join the community and track it to be sure you're notified of all announcements and reminders!

And yes, we're on dreamwidth now - since last year's tumblr version was more stressful than it needed to be, and tumblr has made itself even less viable as a social platform since, hoorah. So dreamwidth it is. If you don't have a dreamwidth account, it isn't absolutely necessary to create one, as you can mostly participate via OpenID.

Come and have fun!

Don't have time to commit to writing/making art for a GBB? You can still participate! Volunteer at this post to alpha, beta, or cheerlead. Authors and artists can then come to this post and ask you if you might want to help them with their project. It is up to the volunteer to decide whether they want to or have the time to take on that particular project - signing up is not a fixed commitment, but it does indicate a willingness to consider each request genuinely according to your current commitments and the unexpected demands of real life.

You may or may not choose to join the community and/or track it, but either way, if you do end up working with somebody, make sure you're aware of the deadlines they're working with.

Beta Readers
All stories must be beta’d for this challenge, and not every author has one that they can use consistently. Betas are essential to writing for a challenge like this, because you catch all of those tricksey little details that authors miss while we’re writing: things like grammar train wrecks, spelling catastrophes, homophonic blunders (e.g. their vs. there, affect vs effect) and punctuation errors (e.g. its vs. it’s). Also, a beta can catch characterisation flaws, missing sections where a scene may have been partially deleted or gone unfinished by mistake, and all those other gaffes that make an author headdesk if they’re not caught before posting.

Alpha Readers
Having an alpha reader is not a requirement of the challenge for writers; however, alpha readers can be incredibly helpful. You don’t take on the proofing responsibilities that a beta does (though if you spot something egregious, you’ll probably point it out anyway), but if an author has a plot hole that you could sail the Lusitania through? You, the alpha, is going to catch it and help them close it. You let the writer know if something doesn't quite make sense or if there’s a loose end that’s not quite tied off right. You can catch those unfinished scenes or characterisation flaws before the fic goes to the beta for proofing, which makes that part go loads faster. And most importantly: you can tell your author whether the story needs fleshing out or trimmed up, and you can offer suggestions when needed. You can brainstorm with the author, you can get really enthusiastic about that plot point or suggest an element of character development, you can help with worldbuilding, and so on. It's up to you and the author! Basically chatter on happily about the thing.

Cheerleaders
Where would the writers and artists be without their cheerleaders? You are the people who keep them going through it all. Writer's block, looming deadlines, Real Life issues that get in the way... you offer support, a shoulder to cry on when they need it, encouragement, a nagging presence when they don't think they'll be able to work without one. ;)

If any of these sound like something you think you'd be inclined to do, please take the time to sign up! Authors will have the opportunity to go through this post and decide who to contact based on what you're willing to read vs. what they're writing.

When signing up, please use the form provided:

Gabriel Big Bang: General Requirements

For writers…

1. Stories must be a minimum length of 15,000 words. There is no maximum, but it must be a completed story at the time of posting.
2. Stories may be slash, gen, or het.
3. The central story element must focus on Gabriel or Richard Speight Jr. This doesn't mean he has to be the point of view character, just that his arc must be the focus of the narrative.
4. AUs are permitted, as are French Mistake 'verse, RPF, or fusions. Crossovers with SPN RPF or FMV are fine too (eg, Gabriel wakes up in FMV or real life and makes friends with Misha). Crossovers into non-SPN verses are strongly discouraged, and are allowed only by negotiation with me. They will only be permitted if they're a very minor crossover - eg, a major character from that other canon makes a cameo appearance, or a minor character turns up a few times. (If you're confused over the difference between crossover and fusion, see this FAQ.)
5. On the day of artist claims, please wait until I've confirmed the author/artist pairings before contacting your artist to begin your collaboration.
6. Beta that baby, people. Nobody wants to read a messy, un-proof-read story. It must be fully betaed BEFORE your posting date.
7. You may not post your story, either as a completed fic or a WIP, anywhere on the internet prior to your assigned posting date. Teasers or samples may be posted, but these should be as short as possible.
8. Stories must be fully coded prior to posting, including anything that your artist has created to be be embedded in the story (e.g., dividers).
9. Your story should be posted on AO3 on your assigned posting date. You may, of course, also choose to add it on tumblr, but if so you must also provide a link to the story on a more stable and reader-friendly platform. A header and links should be submitted to the GBB tumblr. Instructions are over here.

For artists…

1. You are required to create at least one piece of art that falls into one of the following categories:
- Manips, Artwork or Digital Artwork - 500x500px minimum dimensions
- Fanvids - 40 seconds minimum duration.
2. The central element of the artwork must focus on Gabriel or Richard Speight, Jr.
3. Icons, spacers, wallpapers, and fanmix covers do not count toward your obligation, but are of course very welcome in addition to items listed above.
4. Artist claims will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. You will be allowed to request your first choice plus an alternative. I will confirm pairings as we go, and once your claim is confirmed you can contact your author.
5. You may not post your art or vid anywhere on the internet prior to your assigned posting date. Teasers may be posted, but not completed work.
6. Your artwork should be posted on your own journal or website on your assigned posting date. The link to the post should be provided to your author to include on the header they submit to this tumblog. Also note that, if you have created work for your author such as icons to use on the post(s), dividers or pictures to embed in the story, or covers to use with a fanmix, it should be provided to your author before your scheduled posting date so that they can manage all the fiddly code.

Important Note for Authors and Artists

Some people find it more convenient to post their Big Bang work as a locked entry (or series thereof, as the case may be), which allows author and artist to better collate the links between story and artwork prior to submission to the community on the assigned posting date. This is perfectly acceptable, so long as both fic AND artwork are unlocked at the same time.

I will check all entries to ensure that all aspects of the work are unlocked before the post will be allowed. Therefore, if there is any foreseeable reason why author and artist may not be able to post or unlock their respective aspects of the big bang work at the same time, please notify me as soon as possible.

If you have questions about any of this content, please comment below. More details are available at the FAQ and instructions post.
